Role: User experience (UX) research, UX design

McGraw Hill is a learning science company and one of the “big three” educational publishers that creates content, software, and services for pre-K through postgraduate education. On a team of ten K-12 designers and researchers, I helped guide the creation of research-based solutions across print and web curriculum experiences. Since I had worked in education for over a decade in previous roles, I was able to approach my work at MH with empathy for the needs and experiences of students and teachers. While collaborating with colleagues in business, content and digital strategy, market research, and product management, I utilized a framework of continuous discovery to connect us all to the hearts and minds of our users.

Tomi was an extremely valuable member of our UX team at McGraw Hill. Her thoughtfulness and insight helped win hearts and minds as our culture has been shifting towards a more user-centered approach to product development. She is a master of the ambiguous and consistently supported project teams as they explored in generative spaces and then iterated towards requirements, by developing sound research plans, conducting interviews and collecting data, facilitating collaborative analysis and synthesis with the entire project team, and delivering final recommendations. As her manager, I often received feedback indicating appreciation for her collaborative approach, ability to help participants feel at ease during interviews, and effectiveness when addressing research objectives. Additionally, Tomi led and facilitated an internal group through a course where all were able to learn and practice a user-centered approach.
